A good career development counsellor can do more than get someone a job, they can have a massive impact. Work is a big part of most people live and helping them navigate the often complex world of career can be life-changing.

If you enjoy working with people, or you relish the challenges of the business environment, a role in career development could be your path to career fulfilment.

With the world of work changing faster than ever, demand for highly skilled career counsellors is expanding. Opportunities exist across both traditional and emerging sectors, from education settings and employment service industries to corporate environments and agencies working with disadvantaged groups in the community.

The Certificate IV in Career Development is also ideal for:

  • Those wanting to enter the sector or seeking a career change
  • Those already in the sector, (employment consultants, recruiters, etc) wanting to branch into career development or become a job club operator or return to work specialist
  • Those working in the sector but without qualification
  • Those working in education wanting to specialise as career advisors

Overview

As new technologies and industries come on-stream, so do new opportunities. However, in a rapidly evolving job market, traditional work patterns and career arcs will need careful rethinking.

 

This qualification addresses the increasing demand for specialised career mentoring in schools and universities, employment agencies, HR and recruitment, and with providers servicing vulnerable communities. It focuses on the skills, knowledge and interpersonal smarts needed to deliver service and relevant training to individuals, groups and employers.

 

Once in the workplace, your role will involve significant client contact; counselling and providing information about career direction, professional development and training. You will work with a diverse range of people, from school leavers through to experienced professionals looking for new pathways.

 

Graduates with this certificate may also have limited supervisory responsibilities in contexts such as employment services.

Job Roles

This qualification covers workers who provide a range of programs and services to individuals and groups of clients and employers to support them in planning their career and/or locating, securing and maintaining suitable employment.

Work at this level may include, for example:

  • Work in career information and transition services
  • Assisting in career adviser roles in education, training, school or transition work environments.

Occupational titles may include, for example:

  • Career information officer
  • Career and transition services coordinator
  • Career coach
  • Career mentor

This qualification may also be appropriate for workers already holding a relevant professional or vocational qualification for application in areas such as:

  • School career advice and VET in Schools work
  • Human resources, education and training and industry specialisation.

Note that part of the practical assessment for this unit is assessed during the holistic assessment. You must successfully pass the holistic assessment to achieve an outcome of “competent” for this unit.

Entry requirements

There are no prerequisites for this course.

All students will engage in a language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) activity to evaluate potential support requirements. Students who are funded are required to complete an alternative and similar activity.

Students may need to obtain a police clearance to work in certain circumstances – eg in a school.

Units

Course consists of 13 units … 8 core units and 5 electives. Assessment activities will include holistic assessment activities as well as 38hr (minimum) vocational placement at which you will demonstrate your learned skills.
